February Game of the Month

(1) Jones,Avery (1532) - Rutkofske,Lonnie (1851) [A46]

2012 PHCC Championships (3), 26.01.2012

[Alan Gregg]

On paper Lonnie should win, but Avery is a much better player than his results suggest. His major weakness is that he gets into time trouble almost every game and this game is no different.

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Nc3 d6 4.g3 Nbd7 5.Bg2 Rb8 6.0–0 Be7

              7.Nb5

I don't like this move because white uses 4 moves to exchange for the bishop still on c8 .

 7...a6 8.Na7 0–0 9.Nxc8 Qxc8 10.c3 b5 11.Bg5 h6

                                             12.Bc1

This can't be right and is another wasted move. The position is now equal.

12...Rd8 13.Re1 c5 14.Qc2 d5 15.Bf4 Rb7 16.Rac1 Nh5 17.Be3 c4 18.Qd2

                      18...        Bf8

White wants to sac on h6 but Bf8 stops this. Bd6 was better since the sac does not work and knowing Avery, I would have allowed it .  [18...Bd6 19.Bxh6 gxh6 20.Qxh6 Ng7 21.Ng5 Nf8 22.e4 Be7 23.exd5 exd5 24.Nf3 Rd6 25.Qd2 Ng6 and Black is better]

19.Ne5 Nhf6 20.Bf3 a5 21.h3 Nxe5 22.dxe5 Nd7 23.Bd4 Qb8 24.Qe3 Be7 25.Bg2

         25.....                Rc8

[25...b4] 26.h4 Bc5 [26...b4 this has to be played ] 27.Qf4

28... b4 Too late!

[28...Nc5 29.Bxc5 Bxc5 30.e4 dxe4 31.Qxe4 Rbc7 32.Rd2 Rd8 33.Red1 Rxd2 34.Rxd2 Ra7 35.a3 Qc7 equal]

29.e4

Lonnie can still hang on with dxe but

29.......Nc5   ( losing move )

[29...dxe4 30.Rxe4 Rb5 31.Re3 Qc7 32.b3 cxb3 33.axb3 bxc3 34.Rxc3 Qd8 35.Qe4]

30.exd5 Nd3 31.Rxd3 White is now winning, but down to his last 15 minutes. 31...cxd3 32.d6 Rd7

[32...Bd8 33.Bxb7 Qxb7]

33.dxe7 Rxe7 34.Qd2 bxc3 35.bxc3 Qb5 36.Be4 Rb8 37.Bxd3 Qa4 38.Re2 Reb7 39.c4 Qd7 40.Qe3 Rb1+ 41.Bxb1 Rxb1+ 42.Kh2 Rd1 43.Rd2 Rf1 44.Bb6 Qc6 45.Rd8+ Kh7 46.Qd3+ g6 47.Qxf1 Qxb6 48.Rd2

White now has a simple win, but is now down to about 3 minutes, but it should still be enough time. Again,Avery takes too much time over his moves.

48...Qc5 49.Qe2 a4 50.Kg1

[50.Qf3 Qe7 51.c5 Qc7 52.c6 Qe7 53.Rd7; 50.Qf3 Qxe5 51.Qxf7+ Qg7 52.Qxg7+ Kxg7 53.c5]

50...Qa3 51.Rc2 Qc5 52.Rb2 Qd4 53.Rb5

[53.Rb7 Kg7 (53...Qd8 54.Qf3 Kh8 55.Qxf7 Qd1+ 56.Kg2) 54.Qf3 Qa1+ 55.Kh2]

53...Qa1+ 54.Kg2 Qd4 55.c5

[55.Qf3 etc]

55...Qd5+ 56.Kh2 Qc6 57.Qc4 (If Avery had offered a draw after move 31, I would have considered it, but such an offer with just 9 seconds left on his clock, seems a bit late.)

57...Qf3

White lost on time! Life is not fair but since the time control was game in 90 minutes ...which is a lot faster then you think!  0–1
